Great Lakes Article:

Boycott Perrier and Nestle!
Friends of the Mecan
posted 11/13/2002

Note from webmaster: This article is a little old, but the information is still pertinent considering Nestle/Perrier's continued persistence to create more water-bottling plants int the Great Lakes Region.

Wisconsin citizens are concerned that Perrier's plans to extract water for water-bottling plants will damage and deplete their communities' water supplies. On June 13, 2000 residents in the towns of New Haven and Newport overwhelmingly passed referendums opposing commercial use of water and the construction of waterbottling plants in their communities.

Counties, townships, organizations, lake associations and other governing bodies in Wisconsin have passed resolutions in opposition of The Perrier Group of America's proposal without a full Environmental Impact Statement and extensive hydrogeological studies and public hearings.

Twelve counties have passed opposition to spring water extraction resolutions for bottling purposes and concerns for the human environment during the recent Conservation Congress voting, and that taking 700,000 gallons of water from Big Springs per day 12 months a year will
eventually have an adverse affect on local aquifers, lakes, streams and the watershed.

Waterkeepers of Wisconsin, a coalition of groups which includes Friends of the Mecan, Savin' New Haven, Concerned Citizens of the Town of Newport, and Central Wisconsin Trout Unlimited are urging people opposed to Perrier's plans to BOYCOTT PERRIER and NESTLE, the parent company of Perrier.
