LAND USE PLANNER ADVOCATE

Background
The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council is a nonprofit organization
formed in 1979. We are dedicated to protecting our lakes,
streams, wetlands, and ground water through respected
advocacy, innovative education, technically sound water
quality monitoring, and thorough research. We achieve
our mission by empowering others and we believe in the
capacity to make a positive difference. Although we work
throughout the Great Lakes Basin to achieve our goals,
the watersheds of Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet
Counties are our primary service area. We have a diverse
land use program which includes advocacy on land use issues,
drafting and promoting improved land use policies, and
technical services to local governments and land owners.
We perform natural resource inventories, draft master
plans, and promote conservation planning and zoning with
local governments. We advocate for stronger land use policies
and educate the general public on the impact of poor land
use planning and positive alternatives.
Primary Job Responsibilities-
- Review and comment on land use proposals
- Organize and run campaigns on critical land use
issues
- Conduct natural resource inventories for local governments
and property owners
- Draft community master plans
- Promote water resources protection ordinances and
initiatives
- Conduct educational programs to further improved
land use policies
- Prepare maps on GIS system
- Prepare conservation designs for land owners
Start Date:
November 1, 2003 or earlier if possible.
Salary and hours:
Full-time, weekend and evening work required. Salary
based on experience.
Requirements:
Applicants should be dedicated to protecting Northern
Michigan's lakes, streams, wetlands, and ground water.
Bachelors degree in natural resources or land use
planning plus a proven commitment and passion to making
a positive change for the environment. Willingness
to work hard, work independently with strong initiative.
Good written, verbal communication skills, computer
savvy, and well organized.
