Water institute gets $2 million for expansion

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Great Lakes Wisconsin Aquatic Technology and Environmental Research Institute will receive $2 million over the next five years to expand its aquatic biotechnology research and launch its Freshwater Initiative.

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation is contributing $1 million, while UWM's Graduate School will give a matching $1 million.

The institute will add three scientists in molecular biology and genomics, bioinformatics, and bioengineering. It also will develop the nation's first graduate program in freshwater management, funding 20 graduate fellowships. The institute is the largest of its kind in the Great Lakes region.
