Apostle Islands National Lakeshore wilderness designation, comments needed by January 15th

The National Park Service is determining whether to officially manage the Wisconsinís Apostle Islands National Lakeshore as wilderness. Created in 1970, the National Lakeshore consists of more than 20 wild and remote islands in Lake Superior. For more than a decade, 97% of the area has already been managed as wilderness. Official wilderness designation would: ensure permanent protection of the islands wild and primitive nature; help protect habitat for bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and piping plover; satisfy the Wisconsin legislatureís stipulations for donating its land to the federal government, as stated: "It is the policy of the legislature that the Apostle Islands be managed in a manner that will preserve their unique primitive and wilderness character."[Wisconsin Statutes and Annotations 1.026(1)(b)], and; retain boat access to the islands, as quiet zones would not be created.
