Gov. Doyle: Statement on Federal Failure to Fund Asian Carp Barrier

A conference committee of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House yesterday failed to provide the $250,000 needed to operate a critical Asian Carp barrier that has been strongly backed by Governor Doyle as co-chair of the Council of Great Lakes Governors. Governor Doyle made the following statement:

"Congress and the President have not done nearly enough to protect the Great Lakes, and this is just the latest sad example. The fact that they couldn't come up with $250,000 in a $2 trillion budget to protect the Great Lakes is an embarrassment.

"Last year, the federal government fell short on funding the Asian Carp barrier because of cost overruns. The project was completed only after the Council of Great Lakes Governors and member states stepped forward and provided $575,000 to finish the project. Now the federal government has again failed to keep its commitments. And just last month, the White House announced that it would provide no new funding to support the recommendations of its own task force on the Great Lakes.

"I urge Congress and the President to reconsider this decision, and live up to their obligations to protecting our national treasure - the Great Lakes."
