Madison -- The Republican majority in the state Assembly tonight blocked an effort by Democrats to hold a vote on the Great Lakes compact.
Although both sides agreed it was a possibly the most important measure the Legislature would consider, lawmakers voted on party lines not to take up the bill. Rep. Scott Gunderson (R-Waterford), chairman of the Assembly's Committee on Natural Resources, said he wanted to continue to work on the bill, but added it wasn't ready for a final vote.
"There are a lot of powerful forces that would like to see it not done...I have no certainty we will have a special session or extra session," said Rep. Spencer Black (D-Madison). "I can see the possibility of nothing happening on this and that would be a shame for our state."
