St. Louis River week to focus on river restoration

The mayors of Duluth and Superior joined state officials on Friday proclaiming March 19-25 as "Restoring the St. Louis River Week."

Events will include activities to highlight the progress made in cleaning and restoring the river from pollution and habitat destruction as well as concerns still facing the river.

The celebration also marks the 10-year anniversary of the St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee.

The committee was called together a decade ago to help map out problem areas along the lower river and to develop a plan to clean up the river and protect its natural resources -- called the St. Louis River Remedial Action Plan.

That committee's efforts include annually honoring individuals and groups that have helped protect or promote the river. The committee also developed an exhaustive study and maps of the river's fish and wildlife habitat and what would be needed to restore the river to a fully functioning ecosystem.

Scheduled events include:

• River Rendezvous, noon to 4 p.m. March 19, Superior Senior High School. This carnival event will have games, storytelling, drums, face painting for the kids and information about the river for everyone.

• Science panel discussion, 7-9 p.m. March 22, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College conference center. Discussion will focus on the past 10 years and the future of the St. Louis River, the harbor and the western part of Lake Superior.

• Volunteer River Monitoring training session, 6:30-8 p.m. March 23, University of Wisconsin-Superior, McCaskill Hall, Room 143. For all people interested in learning how to monitor their favorite Lake Superior stream.

• "A Taste of the River" fundraising dinner and silent auction, 6:30-9 p.m. March 25, Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth. Hosted by the St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee.
