The future of the great lakes was center stage Thursday evening, as a public forum on the topic was held at City Hall. Concerned residents met with experts on the conservation front lines, and both parties made it clear more has to be done.
Environmental Commissioner for Ontario Gord Miller oversees government decision making relating to the environment. And of serious concern to him, and those gathered for the meeting are Ontario's Great Lakes. As the world's largest source of fresh water their future is extremely important for millions of people. But it could be an out of control factor that affects the lakes in the most extreme fashion....climate change.
The emergence of invasive species can be extremely attributed to climate change, and that was a problem voiced by many in attendance. As well, the degrading of the northshore's beauty, and the long term health of the great lakes were common themes that came through. The call for more environmental accountability when it comes to economic developments was also a point of much debate...as was, as one would expect, the level of pollution in Lake Superior.
Miller stated the need to be proactive....and to lay the groundwork now, and start the efforts to ensure the great lakes will be just that for decades to come.
