Marine conservation area step closer to reality

A major step forward Wednesday in efforts to establish a National Marine Conservation Area on Lake Superior. It comes with the signing of an agreement in principal for the future transfer of the lake bed and lands in the designated area, from the province to federal control.
The proposed Marine Conservation Area would cover the area from Thunder Cape at the tip of the Sleeping Giant to Bottle Point, just east of Terrace Bay.

When it's finally created, it will become the largest such conservation area in Canada. The two senior levels of government will now work on details of a final agreement to protect the designated water and lands. Those discussions will include First Nations in the region on their role in the management and operation of the Conservation area.

Last Friday, a draft deal between provinces and states bordering the Great Lakes has been reached, that will regulate how water from the lakes is used and details of the deal were made public Wednesday.

If approved it would ban large scale diversions from the lakes but permit withdrawals by the bottled-water industry and for other purposes. The bottom line is the deal would allow projects that withdraw less than nineteen million litres of water a day. Critics say that will clear the way for major water exports in the form of bottled water.
