Great Lakes carp barrier gets go-ahead

U.S. Congress has overridden a veto by President George W. Bush and authorized completion of a permanent electrical barrier at Chicago to block Asian carp from the upper Great Lakes.

Authorization for the barrier is contained in the $23.2-billion (U.S.) Water Resources Development Act of 2007. Years in the making, the act received Congressional approval in late September but was vetoed by Bush because of ballooning costs.

Both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly late last week to override the veto.

Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters past-president John Ford welcomed the move.

“I think all people that care about the lakes would view this information as being very positive,” Ford said in an interview from his Tara-area home Tuesday.
