Conservation group to buy bird habitat
The Toledo Blade

MONROE - The Migratory Bird Conservation Commission has voted to buy 153 acres of waterfowl habitat in Berlin Township north of Monroe to expand the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.

About 51 acres will be returned to its natural state once the purchase is completed, said a spokesman for U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D., Dearborn), a member of the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission and founder of the refuge. The remaining areas are marshlands and open waters that access Lake Erie and Estral Beach.

The refuge was established in December, 2001, and expanded in May to include the entire shoreline of Lake Erie’s western basin. The $600,000 to buy the land came from revenue from the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
