New York State Sea Grant wants to help Lake Ontario property
owners roll out the welcome mat for wildlife along the
712-mile southern shoreline that includes Central New
York.
The organization has come up with a guide to help property
owners make their shoreline more attractive for the more
than 3,500 species of plants and animals and 90 species
of fish found along the Great Lakes.
The Lake Ontario Stewardship Guide is available free
on CD or online to the cottage and home owners who occupy
42 percent of the southern shore, New York Sea Grant officials
said.
The guide includes tips for making a wildlife-friendly
shoreline through landscaping with native plants and protecting
shoreline habitat for fish.
Molly Thompson , a dune and habitat educator with New
York Sea Grant in Oswego, is the guide's author.
