Ventura calls for state to increase wind energy Statewire

02/08/2002

ST. PAUL (AP) -- Gov. Jesse Ventura is calling for the state to quintuple the amount of energy generated on wind farms.

The state should aim to produce 10 percent of all power from wind, Ventura told a regional conference on renewable energy Monday.

" There' s no reason why we can' t, " he said, citing the state' s ranking -- ninth -- for wind energy potential.

Commerce Commissioner Jim Bernstein said the state can achieve the goal by the end of the decade.

There are now about 450 wind turbines along the Buffalo Ridge near Lake Benton. They have nearly 300 megawatts of generation capacity, enough to power more than 100, 000 households.

Xcel Energy has said it could more than double its current wind power output from the area over the next 10 years.
