Hearing set for Great Lakes cleanup

The federal government's new plan to clean up the Great
Lakes in cooperation with state, local and tribal governments
will receive a public hearing Aug. 4 in Superior.
The Great Lakes Regional Collaboration will take public
comments on its draft action plan, unveiled July 7 in
Duluth, that outlines proposals to restore the lakes environment,
end pollution and halt habitat destruction.
The Superior meeting is set for 6:30-9 p.m. at Barkers
Island Marina hotel. It's one of several set in coming
days across the Great Lakes region. For more information

Public comments will be accepted through Sept. 9.
The Bush administration is expected to consider public
comments when finalizing the plan in December. It's expected
to be presented to Congress early in 2006.
The draft plan calls for about $20 billion in cleanup
costs and land purchases over the next 15 years to solve
problems such as sewage overflows, invasive species, wetlands
and shoreline habitat destruction and cleanup of toxic
hotspots in ports.
