Health posting at Lake Superior beach

A fourth public beach on Lake Superior received a health
advisory Tuesday from state pollution officials. The Split
Rock River public beach in Lake County has unsafe levels
of fecal coliform and E. coli bacteria, according to tests.
The beach was posted with a "water contact not recommended"
sign, which will remain until the bacteria levels drop.
Three beaches on the harbor side of Point Beach in Duluth
also remain posted with advisories. The bacteria can cause
gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting and diarrhea
if swimmers or boaters ingest contaminated water.
The source of the bacteria is unknown but could include
storm water runoff or waste from wildlife, pets, failing
septic systems or sewer line breaks. Beach monitoring
at Gooseberry State Park and Stewart River Roadside Park
also showed elevated bacteria levels, officials said,
but not high enough to issue advisories.
