receive erosion-prevention grants

The Great Lakes Commission has awarded $1.9 million in
grants to projects that will benefit water quality in
the Great Lakes basin by preventing erosion.
Forty-seven agencies and organizations in all eight Great
Lakes states received grants through the Great Lakes Basin
Program for Soil Erosion and Sediment Control.
Since 1991, the program has financed 306 projects protecting
more than 121,000 acres of land. It's funded through the
U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation
Service.
The projects include a study of how to control stormwater
in heavy clay soils sponsored by the Douglas County Land
Conservation Department.
Along the North Shore in Minnesota, projects include
construction site erosion and sediment control courses
for contractors, sponsored by the Minnesota Erosion Control
Association; creation of the Lake Superior Soil and Water
Conservation District by the Lake Superior Association
of Soil and Water Conservation Districts; real estate
broker education about Lake Superior-area land use, sponsored
by the University of Minnesota Duluth; and a sediment
collection demonstration project sponsored by Duluth's
Environmental Advisory Council.
