Minnesota's TMDL* Program is Under Attack, Again! The
Council of Greater Minnesota Cities (CGMC), the Minnesota
Environmental Science and Economic Review Board (MESERB),
and the League of Minnesota Cities have signed on to a
petition requesting hearings (that will delay the TMDL
rulemaking again) to weaken the nutrient guidance that
the MPCA are proposing.
The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, Clean
Water Action, National Wildlife Federation, MN Conservation
Federation, Mississippi River Revival, and others have
already criticized the MPCA for this section of the TMDL
guidance because it is too weak. The petitioners believe
it is too strong. We need strong voices and bodies to
show up to these hearings to show the Agency and the Judge
that Minnesotans want CLEAN WATER! The MPCA will hold
the public hearings as scheduled (see below). We need
people to turn out to those hearings and support a strong
water quality standards rule for the TMDL program, the
proposed amendments to MN Rules Chapter 7050.
You don't need to be an expert, you just have to care
about the quality of Minnesota's water. The hearings are
scheduled for: -Wednesday, June 12, 2002, 9:30 AM to noon,
and resuming at 1:30 PM if necessary. MPCA Board Room,
525 Lafayette Road, St. Paul. -Thursday, June 13, 2002,
7:00 PM. Suite 400, MPCA Office in Duluth, 525 Lake Ave.
S., Duluth. -Friday, June 14, 2002, 7:00 PM. Detroit Lakes
City Administration Building, 1025 Roosevelt Ave. Detroit
Lakes. -Monday, June 17, 2002, 1:00 - 4:00 PM, and 7:00
PM. Hughes Room, Mankato Holiday Inn, 101 East Main Street,
Mankato. MPCA Contact: Dave Maschwitz, 651-296-7255 *TMDL

Identify waters that don't meet water quality standards,
(2) Prioritize the waters for clean up, and (3) Write
a comprehensive plan and clean them up.
