Stille bill seeks dunes protection

Michigan's sand dunes would be protected from mining and a state fund created to preserve them, if the Legislature approves a bill introduced by Sen. Leon Stille, R-Spring Lake.

Stille's legislation would phase out sand dune mining in Michigan over a 10-year-period and double the mining surveillance fees to establish a state Sand Dune Protection Fund.

"Michigan sand dunes are among the world's most unique and pristine," Stille said.

"From Lake Superior right on to the Michigan and Indiana border, each of the Great Lakes provides ample recreational and environmental opportunities for local families. We must protect the dunes and preserve them for our youngsters and future generations."
