Spawning Grounds Searched For Lamprey
By Lisa Sanders
Posted June 29, 2007

SHEBOYGAN(WFRV) - An old threat to Great Lakes fishing may be adding to it's breeding grounds in the Sheboygan and Manitowoc Rivers.

A US Fish and Wildlife team from Marquette Michigan is scoping out possible spawning areas for Lamprey.

Now a Lampricide is being sprayed into those areas to draw out the larvae. This scientific census would help determine the size of a control effort.

Shawn Nowicki is a Fish Biologist, "We would get a population estimate in the infested area and also to determine their distribution - where their range is within the system."

US Fish and Wildlife Biologists will start surveys in Manitowoc County this weekend and finish their work by July 5th.
