Research vessel offers free rides

HOUGHTON -- The public is invited to sign up for free excursions on the Agassiz, Michigan Technological University's Great Lakes research vessel.

Three 45-minute tours will be held on Monday, May 14, at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. The boat will depart from a dock near the Portage District Library, which is sponsoring the event. Each tour is limited to 17 participants age 6 or older, and interested persons should register by calling (906) 482-4570.

The Agassiz is available for scientific excursions for middle- and high-school students and teachers between May and October. For more information, visit or call Joan Chadde at (906) 487-3341.
