WEST BEND - Washington County is pooling resources with four neighboring counties in order to secure funding to properly dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medication to help keep drug residuals out of regional surface water.
The county will participate in its first ever Medicine Collection Day: A Prescription for Clean Water & Safe Kids on April 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Washington County Fair Park - the same day Racine, Milwaukee and Ozaukee counties will run concurrent collections as part of the first-time joint effort.
The Environmental Protection Agency was accepting grant applications as part of its Great Lakes Funding Program, according to West Bend Sewer Utility superintendent Scott Tutas. The grant required a multi-jurisdictional group to hold a medicine collection day on a date close to Earth Day 2008, April 22.
