Report: Lake Michigan has more mercury than other Great

LakesSeptember 20, 2005 - A Chicago-based energy company says it will perform tests to determine if new technology effectively reduces mercury emissions.

A draft report released today concludes that coal-fired power plants operated by Midwest Generation Incorporated and other companies contributed to mercury levels in Lake Michigan that were higher than any other Great Lake.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration study released today by Illinois Congressman Mark Kirk shows that coal-fired power plants are the main source of the pollution.

In response, Midwest spokesman Charley Parnell says the company will test technology next year that could reduce emissions at two power plants.

During a hearing at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, the Environmental Law and Policy Center calls for legislation that would speed up mercury reduction by power plants.
